This was my first salon, so I didn’t know what to expect. First thoughts in response to the question was to suggest that people fear ageing because we are constantly bombarded with social media images & adverts on youth. Teenage models, plastic surgery, botox and so on. Then, an idea from another guest, opened my mind. In their eyes, we are afraid of ageing because it reminds us of death, and getting old reminds us of just that - dying.
We soon understood how she arrived at this conclusion. After bravely sharing that her mom had Alzheimer’s, she highlighted that it forced her to confront her mom getting older and closer to the unknown. Maybe if we stop fearing death we stop fearing ageing?
